A saxophone is a musical instrument that belongs to the woodwind category. It is one of the youngest musical instruments. Saxophones were generally used in the military and in big orchestras but are now found in smaller bands as well. They are generally used for big band music, pop music and jazz. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian, in the 1840s. Later, many people made their own alterations to the instrument. There are many types of saxophones but the four most commonly used saxophones are: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophones.

The soprano saxophone is the smallest as well as the highest-sounding. It is straight in shape and resembles a clarinet, though curved models, resembling miniature alto saxophones, are also available. Curved models were more popular during the 1930s. The soprano saxophone is a B-flat instrument. It is generally preferred for jazz music, but rarely used for classical compositions.

The soprano saxophone has become very popular these days, especially with jazz, rock and pop music. John Coltrane, a popular jazz saxophonist, was responsible for making the soprano saxophone fashionable in the 1960s. The soprano saxophone is generally considered to be the most difficult to play, compared to alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.

Even in soprano saxophones, there are many models: F mezzo-soprano, soprano, C soprano and sopranino are the smallest saxophones in that order. Soprano in C, and mezzo-soprano in F are very popular models. C sopranos were meant for military bands and vaudeville arrangements. C sopranos are almost similar to B sopranos though they are 2 centimeters shorter than B sopranos.

The local music store, mail-order service, a private party or the Internet are the different sources for buying soprano saxophones. The main aspects to be considered are the quality, service, price and the model. The Internet is a good source to find information about soprano saxophones, but it is wise to test a few of them before buying.

Many people play the alto saxophone as a matter of occupation playing the instrument professionally and making a living out of it. For some, playing the saxophone may just be a habit or a hobby, a matter of interest that has developed over the years. Whatever may be the reason for one's interest in playing the musical instrument, it is for certain that to be able to play any type of saxophone, one must acquire the skill and techniques necessary. Thus, learning the basics is important. Knowing about alto saxophone playing in a theoretic level may also prove beneficial as it provides for a groundwork in furthering one's interest and knowledge about the instrument. But then again, all these are not sufficient if one really intends to play the saxophone with ease. To develop one's skill and acquire the techniques necessary to be able to practically play the instrument and eventually, play it with ease requires practice. This simply means that one has to start playing the instrument for real.

Since there are different types of saxophones available to enthusiasts in the market, choosing the right saxophone to play is crucial. For beginners, the primary motivation or purpose for purchasing or playing the saxophone is to learn how to play it. The main focus therefore is the acquisition of basic skill and technique, which of course would eventually lead to the acquisition of advanced skill and techniques for a more adept playing of the instrument. In this regard, altos are best recommended to beginners and to those who only have minimal or elementary skill level in playing the saxophone.

The key for alto saxophone is in E flat (or Eb). There are two main reasons as to why they are considered the best instrument for beginners or absolute beginners in saxophone playing. First, most musical and practice pieces are written within the alto range. This means that the range or the key is the same as that of the alto saxophone. Hence, one can use them in playing practice pieces without the added difficulty of adjusting the key or the range of the instrument or of the piece. This further means that people with these saxophones have more opportunity playing the instrument. This allows them more opportunity to practice and more time spent honing one's skill in saxophone playing. If it were for anything, the learning process is actually accelerated and reinforced given the availability of practice materials or musical pieces.

Second, the structure of the saxophone also makes it a good instrument for absolute beginners. The bell of the instrument is located up compared to the other types of saxophone. This means that the person playing the instrument will have a better hearing of the music or sound produced from the saxophone played than the other saxophones which other people may be simultaneously playing. The benefit of this is that the beginner will easily spot some notes which may sound off and therefore he may easily track his mistakes during practice. And the more the person realizes his mistakes, the better opportunity for him to correct himself and practice correctly. Thus for these reasons, alto saxophones are recommended to beginners.

The saxophone is a wonderful instrument that adds depth and variety to many pieces of music. It is a woodwind instrument and it uses a single reed attached to its mouthpiece. The reed vibrates as the air passes through it to allowing the saxophone to produce its great sound.

In the early 1800's, Adolphe Sax noticed that there was a bit of a gap between the brass and woodwind sections of the orchestra. The gap was produced because of the relatively quiet sounds produced by the woodwinds and the lack of versatility of pitch range among the brass instruments. Therefore, he developed the saxophone which gave strength of voice to the woodwinds and flexibility to the brass. He developed the instrument in 1841 and actually developed two different groups of the instruments. Between the Sopranino saxophone and the Contrabass saxophone, the one group of these instruments could span the entire range offered by a piano. Many of these are transposing instruments which lend a whole different set of abilities to the saxophones.

The patent that was given to Mr. Sax in 1846 expired in 1866. After the patent expired, numerous other musicians and instrument makers adjusted and added to Mr. Sax's original invention until it has evolved into the smooth handling instrument we have today. The original saxophone keys were very basic and simple but that made some of the passages difficult to play because of the way the fingering worked on the keys of the saxophone. Therefore, those improvements have added quality and simplicity to the instrument allowing saxophonists to be able to play difficult passages of music with relative ease.

The timbre of the saxophone, while originally intended as an orchestral instrument, lends itself, however, to many different types of music. Because of its intended and achieved musical versatility, the sax is a great instrument for jazz and blues music as well as rock and roll and big band music. Its size also makes it very easy for instrumentalists in marching bands to handle. The military band personnel play for many different functions and ceremonies including military funerals, welcoming dignitaries, swearing in of various political leaders, etc. This requires the versatility to be able to play those different types of music. The saxophone family of instruments actually has a "military band family" of saxophones such as the Subcontrabass saxophone, the baritone saxophone all the way to the sopranino saxophone. Many of these are used in orchestral pieces and particularly jazz pieces. Famous instrumentalists such as Kenny G have albums that feature his ability to play several different instruments in the saxophone family including the soprano sax primarily but also the alto and tenor sax, as well.

Students in grade school begin to learn to play the saxophone in about the fourth or fifth grades when they join the band at school. Because of size issues, most learn to play the alto sax because it is the right size for their fingers and their stature. The soprano saxophone, though much lighter, is considered a solo instrument and is more expensive that either the also or tenor sax. It is therefore not offered by most schools. However, alto saxophones and some tenor saxophones are can be purchased relatively inexpensively so many schools have both available. Once a student has learned to play the alto or tenor saxophone, it is usually fairly simple to move between the instruments in the saxophone family provided you understand the theory of transposition instruments and how that functions between the kinds of saxophones available.

If you want a smooth sounding instrument that lends itself to many different musical styles, you will not go wrong in learning to play the saxophone. Start with the alto or tenor sax, learn the notes and the way to hold and play the instrument. From there, you will be able to move to other types of saxophones, should you desire to do so. As it is, when you learn to play the sax, you will have an ability that will wow your friends and give you great pleasure at being able to pick up and play some of your favorite orchestral, jazz, or blues tunes anytime you wish.
